Chelsea prepare shock swap move involving newcomer and £50m star

Chelsea could use Nathan Ake as a makeweight to land Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk, according to reports.

The Saints cente-back has been linked with a move away from St Mary’s Stadium in the last two transfer windows and this summer looks to be a familiar story.

Despite spending big on David Luiz last summer, and having Andreas Christensen coming back from a two-year loan with Borussia Monchengladbach, reports suggest that the Blues are determined to bolster the squad at the end of the season, with defensive targets already being drawn up.

Van Dijk, who has been huge for the Saints since his arrival from Celtic, might be an ideal signing for Chelsea, who need a replacement for veteran skipper John Terry and some quality at backline to compete with David Luiz, Christensen, Gary Cahill, Kurt Zouma and Cesar Azpilicueta.

The Sun claims van Dijk’s potential move to Stamford Bridge could see fellow Dutch defender Ake head in the other direction. The 22-year-old failed to make an impact at Chelsea and may now want to play first-team football regularly, and after Bournemouth failed with a £17million bid to land him permanently in January.

However, Claude Puel’s man are not keen on letting their vice-captain leave, who still has five years left on his contract and would cost more than £50m.

In the England’s top flight, van Dijk has won 30 tackles this season with a success rate of 55%, made 55 interceptions, 139 clearances and 14 blocks, but missed last five Premier League games due to malleolar injury.
